Short answer: Google says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews. A page needs to be indexed, eligible for a snippet in regular Google Search, and relevant to the query. For local businesses, this means: get indexed, complete your Google Business Profile, write clear answers to customer questions on your website, and build consistent citations. No special files, no magic schema. Just the fundamentals done well.
What Google actually says
From Google Search Central’s official documentation on AI-powered features in Search:
- “No additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in regular Google Search.
- No special machine-readable files or “AI text files” are needed.
- No special schema or structured data is required beyond what’s already good practice for regular search.
In other words: if your page shows up in regular Google Search with a snippet, it’s eligible for AI Overviews. The AI decides which pages to cite based on relevance, authority, and the query context.
Practical checklist for local businesses
1. Get indexed in Google Search
- Set up Google Search Console and confirm your key pages (home, services, contact, locations) are indexed.
- Submit an XML sitemap.
- Make sure your pages aren’t blocked by robots.txt or noindex tags.
2. Complete your Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.
- Fill in all fields: categories, hours, attributes, services, photos, description.
- Keep your NAP (name, address, phone) consistent everywhere.
- Respond to reviews regularly.
3. Write clear answers to customer questions
Your website should answer the questions customers actually ask. For each service, include:
- What you do and who it’s for
- Where you serve (cities, neighborhoods, service area)
- When you’re available (hours, same-day options, how to book)
- Price signals (ranges, insurance accepted, financing)
- Credentials and proof (licenses, years in business, certifications)
Add FAQ sections to service pages. Write the way customers talk, not marketing jargon.
4. Use standard LocalBusiness structured data
Google recommends using LocalBusiness schema with the most specific subtype (Dentist, Plumber, Attorney, etc.). This helps Google understand your business type, location, hours, and contact info.
Important: Google says no special schema is needed for AI features, so treat this as good hygiene, not a requirement. The information must match what’s visible on the page.
5. Build consistent citations
- Get listed in industry-specific directories (healthcare directories, legal directories, etc.).
- Claim your Bing Places for Business listing.
- Join your local chamber of commerce or trade association.
- Pitch stories to local news or blogs (genuine coverage, not paid links).
- Make sure every mention uses the same NAP everywhere.
6. Get and maintain strong reviews
AI assistants often reference reviews when describing businesses. Aim for:
- Recent reviews on Google and at least one other platform (Yelp, industry sites, etc.).
- Reviews that mention specific services and outcomes.
- Professional responses to all reviews, especially critical ones.
What doesn’t work (myths to ignore)
- Special “AI text files” like llms.txt: Google says you don’t need these.
- Ranking #1 in regular search: Ahrefs found only ~38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, March 2026).
- Keyword stuffing for AI: Google’s ranking systems still apply. Write for humans.
- Paying for guaranteed placement: No one can guarantee your business will be cited in AI Overviews. Anyone promising that is overpromising.
How to measure your visibility
You can search Google yourself and see if AI Overviews appear for your category + city. But results vary by location, personalization, and timing. For a consistent baseline:
- Use Google Search Console to track which queries show your site in regular search.
- Run an AI visibility check with a tool that uses live search and shows you the actual AI answers.
- Our free check uses Powered by Google Gemini with live web search and scores your visibility across 8 customer-intent questions. Not the same as AI Overviews, but the same underlying search index. The sample report shows the full evidence pack; pricing is a one-time $69 if you want that readout for your own business.
Bottom line: Show up in Google AI Overviews by being findable, consistent, and clearly relevant to customer questions. No tricks, no special files. Just do the fundamentals well.
